I sat down for a look at Kept Darkly and the minute hand that I had tasked for a brief look flew ahead on it's own schedule. The pendulum that had swung to the periphery of my reading spectrum, where paranormal romance sits, moved...quickly, to a spot close to center. Tarrant Smith's work in this third book in the series commanded my attention. Let me explain.
Yes, I had read and appreciated Enchanted Darkly. And I found that Bound Darkly engaged me a bit more. But from the end of my spectrum where I sat, I did not expect to be captivated by the Darkly series. I was.
I'm sure that the map of Seelie and Unseelie Relationships at the beginning helped to orient me in territory still only vaguely familiar to me, but that does not account for how smoothly I followed the characters that I really began to care about. Rionna's passion to be true to herself while allowing herself the vulnerability to discover what that was seized my compassionate attention. I admired Sel's stoic loyalty as did I his ability to listen to his heart. The complete cast of characters out-pictured a rich and real life.
I found myself suddenly comfortable moving from world to world, shifting with the characters at a moment's notice. The descriptions of those worlds, even though they were new and different to me resonated with me, permitting my entrance to them. I anticipated the events that occurred, but could not predict them precisely. I enjoyed the surprises. You will, too.
Smith has come a long way in this third book in the series, and doubtless will continue to march ahead as she continues. I was surprised and very satisfied with my read of Kept Darkly, and you may be as well.
Each book is stronger and more well written than the last. Fantastic young author with a bright future and many more enchanting books to be written.
ok..this was my 1st Tarrant Smith book..and the 3rd books in the Darkly Series. I love that Ms. Smith provides the reader with a flow chart in the book on the characters/Fae Courts and how they're related, and a glossary of common terminology in the back. Especially helpful for the reader like me who jumped into the middle of a series and don't already know the characters.
Anyone who enjoys stories of the Fae and understands how politically ruthless they can be will thoroughly enjoy this book. Our focal character is Riona, princess and bastard daughter of the Unseelie King (a very wicked man) from whom she hides. Sel, Captain of the Guard of the Seelie Queen, Gwen (forced mate to the Unseelie King)has been contracted by the Queen to be the mate of Sel. The Queen's motives are self-motivated in this match, but being a seer, she also believes it to be a good match for both.
Without giving away any spoilers, the story evolves around Sel and Riona growing to trust and love one another, while venturing into the Underworld on a mission for the Queen in finding her true mate, the Absent King, Arthur, and avoiding become once again a pawn to her evil father, the Unseelie King.
The book was good enough that I'll purchase books 1 & 2 in the series, as well as subsequent ones as released. Ms. Smith also says that there are more erotic tales concerning the Darkly Series available to those who wish to read them. 3.8 stars of 5 for Kept Darkly.
