Volume 1 of 3 Living a Secret Life - Kristine’s life seems perfect from the outside – she is beautiful, impeccably dressed, and smart. She can even hunt and shoot better than most men, thanks to the close attention of her father, a Police Chief. She is ready to escape her parents and start a new life. But despite outward appearances, a dark legacy has separated her from those around her. Only Daniel – persistent and loving – is able to break through her protective shell to get close to her, leading to the revelation of a disturbing family secret. When Kristine’s shame comes to light in a violent, highly publicized event, her perfect life shatters beyond recognition. She must put her college plans on hold, and find a way to cope. With Daniel at her side, she finds support from unexpected corners, and works to create a new family of friends. And yet, her past continues to follow her. She is confronted with traumatic flashbacks, new enemies who remind her of her father, and wave after wave of violence erupting against the backdrop of events in 1969.
Not only a sensitive portrayal of a girl transformed, A Year for Kristine is a fast-paced tale of guns, cars and steel, within the culture of a dying Rust Belt town. A Year for Kristine takes us back to the turbulence of the 1960s and gives us a young woman struggling into adulthood, who has to learn how to fight for everything that is important to her.

Kristine is the girl everyone looks up to in school. She's beautiful, smart and talented. But behind her picture perfect life lies a dark secret. With a cruel and manipulating father and a drunken mother Kristen is on her own. That is until she meets band mate, Daniel. Set in a small town in Pennsylvania in the 1960's, the characters seem only marginally aware of the turbulence gripping the rest of the country. The writing is crisp and straight forward and the dialogue rings true. The characters are likable. Mr. Lucas as certainly spent some time with teenagers. All in all a good read. Looking forward to number two in the trilogy.Product details

A Year for Kristine Volume 1 Living a Secret Life edition by Bruce Lucas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
So depressing.
This is a good book. After reading volume 1 I had to read volume 2 and 3. I would recommend.
Good story so far - leaves you wanting to read Volume 2.
Being from that area and time makes it more interesting to me than it might be to other readers.
From the gripping scene in the first chapter that defines the tortured relationship around which the novel unfolds, to symbolic destruction and hints of rebirth in the last, this novel is a fast-paced journey through the lives of small-town teens. Lucas captures beautifully the social and sexual tensions of adolescence and the at-once stifling and isolating character of small-town life. I hated reaching the end and eagerly await parts 2 and 3.
Lucas has written a page turner that cries out to be made into a movie. His descriptions of small town and
high school life Indicate a mind with an uncanny memory for what it must have been like to grow up in the period. I see Jennifer Lawrence in the lead.
At first glance, this is not a story about love. It's certainly not a fairy tale. But first impressions rarely tell the whole story, and we soon find that A Year for Kristine is very much about love and friendship with a realism rooted in the humanity of its characters and in its small town setting. Will love ultimately survive? We don't know yet. And since I must find out, I've just purchased the sequel!
I usually don't read fiction, but this book kept my attention and I found it hard to put down once I started reading. Being a New Castle native it brought me to many places and recollections of characters of my past that have faded in my memory. I believe most can relate to their own growing experience, especially the high school years, no matter what town they grew up in. Bruce does a great job tying in characters and personalities we all find in real life, and creating an engrossing story that revolves around dysfunction, the struggle of the human spirit to overcome, and the bonding of lives unfortunate circumstances can create.
