'This book is my attempt to find the truth about health care in Australia today; what decisions were made in the 1970s and 1980s that have resulted in the system in which I work; and who made those decisions' After the success of MAKING THE CUT, in which he described his work as a surgeon, and THE PATIENT, in which he wrote about the life of a man terminally ill with cancer, Mohamed Khadra moves to their natural sequel - the topical subject of the healthcare system in Australia. In this book, Khadra explains how our hospitals came to be stifled by bureaucracy; whether we can and should administer universally free health care to our population; and how best we can do that in 2010. He also peppers the book with compelling examples of real people he has treated - patients whose health he should have been able to improve, but who became stuck in a system that made their lives worse. Heath care is an incredibly emotive topic, which everyone has an opinion on. With the release of Prime Minister Rudd's proposed reforms at the beginning of 2010, this book is a timely reminder of how they may or may not help resuscitate a system in crisis.

Terminal Decline A Surgeons Diagnosis of the Australian Healthcare System Mohamed Khadra 9781459623606 Books

This book takes a refreshing and novel look at the issues confronting healthcare in Australia and for that matter anywhere in the developed world. I believe that the Australian system is better than that reported by Dr Khadra's experience but his views on its deficiencies and recommended solutions are valid. This book should be compulsory reading for anyone interested in healthcare as it gives food for thought as to why health is controversial in most countries, how to avoid mistakes of the past and in the case of Australia how an essentially good system with its mix of public and private hospitals could be made much better.

I could not put down this delightfully written book until I had finished reading it.

Book review Terminal Decline by Dr Mohamed Khadra

This paperback book of 263 pages is an attempt to describe accurately the state and nature of the Australian health system and what decisions were made during the 1970s and 1980s that have resulted in the backward, stressed and non-workable system of today. There are interviews with various politicians and health ministers, most of whom were absolutely useless in my opinion. How the Australian health system dispenses health is one of the most contentious issues in Australia today.

In this book Dr Khadra outlines confronting and compelling stories of real people who he has treated, whose health he should have been able to improve, but who became stuck in a system that ended up making their lives worse. He explains how Australian hospitals have become stifled by bureaucracy. The author believes that the Australian system is in terminal decline (like many other features of that country!).

A highly disturbing but well written and interesting book which highlights matters of serious concern should be acted on by politicians before on the whole system implodes in on itself. Highly recommended reading.

Well written, interesting historical look at health funding in Australia and the issues not being addressed- end of life care, rationing in the last 6 months of life, getting value versus absolute best care at 10* the price.
